A Little At A Time

Okay, so this whole “weight lose journey” is definitely a journey, not a destination!  I am in the groove and can see and feel the inches and pounds coming off. Having said that, I only lost one-half pound last week! (Yes, 8 ounces!) I know, it’s like 2 sticks of butter…but I can certainly tell it in my clothes!  My jeans are so much looser (even after washing and drying them) and the waist bands of my dress slacks are getting more comfortable. My “hard to reach” places, like my back, has less rolls!  Oh how sad does that sound! At any rate, I am sticking to my diet most days. I won’t say that I never get hungry, but I will say that my Want is stronger than the hunger—Not because I need to eat, only because after dinner at 7:30 I like to eat!

My husband and I stopped to get gas last week and he ran in to get a diet soda. when he returned, I said, “Remember the good old days when you would run in and get us a Snickers Bar to go along with that diet coke?”  He laughed and said, “Yes, but were they really the good old days?”  Sigh…I have to admit I am keeping my focus on my upcoming trip to Hawaii!  The thing about UniqueU Weight Loss, and all diets really, is that if you don’t stick to the plan, it doesn’t work! Sticking to this plan has been the most successful for me of anything I have done in my yo-yo dieting days of adulthood! It works when I work it!

Hopefully we can say that the bitter cold days of winter are fading in the distance and the enjoyable spring days are ahead. Getting out for an evening walk is much nicer when you don’t have to maneuver through the snow or slosh through the muck! I am looking forward to getting outside for some Vitamin D!  Since joining UniqueU in January, I have lost 13 pounds (about 5 weeks) not wonderful, but with all the things happening in those same weeks, I am feeling pretty good about it. I want to lose 30 pounds by May 1st, and I am on target to reach that goal.

If you are having trouble making up your mind if this is the right diet for  you, all I can say is, try it- it works! It is relatively easy, very convenient as you can eat what you have in your house, nothing special or peculiar–the important thing is to learn how to manage what you eat in both quantity and in calories. Then determine that you will do it-for your health, yourself, your lifestyle. I know first hand that regardless of WHO you want to lose wight for, the only one that matters when you step on that scale is little old YOU!

So come on and join me–let’s make these days the “good old days!”hawaii girls for blog

All right, so maybe I won’t look like this Hawaiian beauty, but at least I’ll be able to shake my booty without everything else shaking too!

The Key is "Think Small" (and lose big!)

So after a month on the UniqueU Weight Loss plan, I have officially lost 11.2 pounds! I am so very happy! I can start to feel the belly shrink and the waist bands of my pants are now comfortable, rather than breath-taking; I have not had to lay on the bed to zip anything for the last week! Small miracles abound!

I have also learned that by “thinking small” it changes my out look.  On restricted calories, it forces me to explore all the aspects of my food. What is good, what has protein, what has hidden fat and calories.  So I have gotten myself into a routine. I have a small, 50-calorie cup of Light and Fit yogurt for breakfast or a snack; I grab a smaller plate to eat dinner on; I get a small salad when eating out; I have a small mandarin orange, (and sometimes two of them) as one contains only 35 calories!

I have noticed my mindset is changing. Instead of seeing “how much I get for my money” when eating out, I look at how little can I get and still fill up. I can get a cop of soup, rather than a bowl; a slice of 35-calorie bread, rather than a regular 80-calorie slice. There are so many differences in calories/fats and NO difference in taste.

My biggest challenge has always been in the evening, so I have developed ways of keeping my hands busy doing something other than feeding my face. I scrapbook, read, play computer games, write, …just about anything other than sitting mindlessly in front of the TV.  My next great challenge is exercising. Every week I plan to start at the gym on Monday (my membership is still in-tact, but it is doubtful they will remember my face!)  Then every Monday it is bitterly cold; snowy streets; and my warm hubby pulls me back in bed!  But I have promised myself even if I don’t go out to the gym, I will do something “in” at home.

My crazy life is probably no different than many of you who are reading this post. I have a full time job, teach Sunday School, have lots of friends and relatives requiring extra curricular activities.  I rush out the door in the morning and collapse back in the door that night. I work at my computer sometimes on “projects” until 10 or 11 p.m. only to fall into bed and start all over the next day.

But, life is precious. Time is a gift. Health is a tremendous treasure that must be guarded.  Don’t take it for granted. Take charge of your life, loose the weight and “Think Small”!

Life Happens – Make Good Choices

They say that Life Happens when you are busy making other plans. That’s been my mantra for the last two and a half

weeks. As soon as I decided to start back on my UniqueU Medical Weight Loss Program, my mom got sick and went into the hospital. My older sister came for a visit so she could see Mom; we sat in the hospital, both of us getting sick with bronchitis; my mom got worse. My daughter arrived from Florida; my son and younger sister arrived, my mom passed away and everyone I know brought food!

My first week on my program was a good one but I missed my appointment because by then, my mom was in ICU.  Bless her heart, she was ready to “go home.” At 80, she felt she had lived a full life, and although we weren’t ready to say goodbye (are we ever?), she was ready for the next adventure!

After the death comes the memorial and more food. By the next week, I was certain I had gained anything back I had lost, but I made good choices and ended up losing almost 6 pounds! In the last six days, my family members all went home (after re-acquainting their Cincinnati taste bunds with Grater’s ice cream, Grippo’s chips, Skyline Chili and White Castles)…. But I made good choices.

Then my daughter came back this week for a long-time planned “girlfriend weekend” in Wilmington at a scrapbooking event on Saturday and Sunday.   Sigh….but I made good choices, munching on blueberries, drinking my water, and eating an orange.

I guess you can say that Life Happens. This is not the unusual, it is the norm. We can always find something to sidetrack us: A death, a birth, a hospital stay, an out of town guest, a trip. While I didn’t do great on the detox part of my diet, I did the best I could do. I made good choices.

I am anxious to see what happens on the scales this week (yes I said anxious)….I’ll let you know-In the meantime, make good choices: do the best you can do, and know that no matter what you plan, Life Happens.

Roll with it.

I’m Baaaaccccckkk!

After losing 57 pounds
Here i was pretty close to my goal in size 14 dress.

There is no shame in starting over—the shame is in knowing there is a solution and doing nothing about it.  Five years ago this month I joined Unique U Weight Loss program. I lost close to 60 pounds in about six months. I loved being on it and my new look and feel. It was just in time to celebrate my 40th Anniversary (yes I was a child bride). At that time I was also hosting a weekly TV program and maintaining my regular career as a writer.  I kept the weight off for about three years. Gradually I started to gain a pound or two, always limiting myself to “that is as much as I can gain.” But it wasn’t’ as much as I gained.

Last year when my husband broke his ankle in January, as any good wife would do, I began to cook comfort foods to make him feel better. Month by month I gained a little more; of course we couldn’t go to the gym since my husband was in a cast. Then in April I started working for a new company and I was back in sales, away from the healthy (or not so healthy) foods in my own kitchen, basking on fast foods and restaurants. Soon my size 16 pants were so tight I got a wedgie every time I wore them! But I had generously given away all of my size 18’s.  Well, actually, I was able to find three pair in the back of my closet (thankfully!) One pound lead to another and when I finally made the decision to go back to Uniuqe U, the ONLY place that has ever helped me lose and keep it off, I was a mere 10 pounds shy of what I weighed when I started there five years ago….

The good thing about all this is that I know I can do it; and I will be taking you along with me—so please, follow me in this blog and keep me accountable. I started last week and go for my first weigh in tomorrow. I will be sharing my success with you weekly!  Life happens. it’s all about how you handle it!

So how was the first week of detox? Pretty good! I am loving the fact that I can eat fruit, veggies and salads that I love, and I really don’t care about not eating the red meat or pork.  Sugar and carbs are an issue, but now after six days, I am getting used to it. My biggest vice is Diet Coke. I will admit I have splurged and had one a couple of times—just a glass (not a biggie drink from Thornton’s)  I really haven’t’ missed it much either.

The thing that is keeping me going is that I know I can do it. It is a fast and consistent weight loss of three to four pounds a week and over the next 12 weeks, I hope to get back to “looking decent” as now we will be celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary in Maui!  Cheer me on!
